Description
The Agave isthmensis ‘Kabutogani’ Variegata, often known as the Variegated Dwarf Butterfly Agave or “Horseshoe Crab,” is a highly sought-after, rare, and compact succulent that matures into a striking rosette, rarely exceeding 8-12 inches in height and width. It is prized by collectors for its thick, armor-like, spoon-shaped leaves that create a “monstrose” or “fused-teeth” effect, resembling a creature’s crest.
- Variegation: The plant features thick, fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves that are blue-grey, silver-green, or olive-green in the center, bordered by broad, creamy-yellow or white margins.
- Spines/Teeth: The margins are armed with sharp, hooked, reddish-brown to dark chestnut marginal teeth that contrast sharply with the yellow variegated edges.
- Shape: It forms a tight, symmetrical, low-growing rosette, often described as looking like a “giant artichoke,” which typically reaches only 8 to 12 inches in height and width.
- Texture: The leaf surface is generally smooth but deeply scalloped (crested or monstrose) due to the teeth structure.
- Flowering: As a monocarpic plant, it blooms only once after 10–20+ years, producing a tall, 3-meter+ stalk with small yellow to orange flowers, after which the main plant dies.
- Offsets: It readily produces pups/offsets as the mother plant matures, ensuring the continuation of the plant.
- Cultivation: It is slow-growing and excellent for containers, thriving in bright, filtered light to prevent bleaching of the variegated margins.
